CentraleSupélec, an engineering “Grande École”

CentraleSupélec is the 2015 merger of two historical institutions: the École Centrale des Arts et Manufacture (1829), a.k.a. “Centrale”, and the École Supérieure d’Électricité (1894), a.k.a. “Supélec”. It has harnessed the best of the two institutions into its innovative multi-disciplinary engineering curriculum that prepares its student-engineers to become highly qualified executives and leaders in business and research.

One institution, three campuses

CentraleSupélec comprises three campuses: the Paris-Saclay campus is located outside Gif-sur-Yvette, a suburban town 25km/15 miles south of Paris; the Metz campus, in Eastern France, lies a close half-hour train ride away from the German border; while the Rennes campus, in the Brittany region of western France, is even closer to ocean beaches on the Atlantic coast. Deeply rooted in their regional ecosystems, each of the three campuses have acquired an international reputation in their fields of specialization.

The Paris-Saclay campus

Part of the wider Université Paris-Saclay campus, the CentraleSupélec Paris-Saclay campus is the core of the University’s Graduate School of Engineering and Systems Sciences. Inaugurated in 2017, it comprises four buildings, two of which were added to the original Supélec buildings then. In addition to the teaching and research facilities, these buildings also host several innovation centres, student clubs and societies, state-of-the-arts collaborative workspaces, a language centre where 10+ languages are taught, a sports centre, a start-up incubator, a library, a cafeteria and dining hall, and a 970-seat auditorium.

Within walking distance from other Université Paris-Saclay facilities, the CentraleSupélec Paris-Saclay campus also provides access to its world-class research laboratories, among which its renowned mathematics labs, which have earned Université Paris-Saclay its #1 rank in Mathematics in the 2020 Shanghai Academic Ranking.

A three-year higher education institution

After their high school diploma and two years of preparatory classes, candidates for our institution take a highly competitive national entrance exam, which only about 6% of students successfully pass. They then study at our School for 3 years, at the end of which they are awarded the title of Engineer, equivalent to a Master’s degree.
CentraleSupélec’s graduates are top-level science and engineering professionals, multi-disciplinary engineers for abstract and complex systems. They are committed leaders and team players with professional and social skills; adaptable, innovative and pragmatic. They are also internationally competent, professionally skilled in a global environment, multilingual and prepared to tackle global and local challenges.

A teaching institution with research at its core

As coordinator of the Graduate School of Systems Science and Engineering of Université Paris-Saclay, CentraleSupélec’s research handles multidisciplinary projects with various academic centres and industrial partners. The Graduate School accommodates more than 1,000 Master’s students and 600 PhD students in several research areas, including materials science, mechanics, civil engineering, industrial engineering, optics, telecommunications, robotics, biomedical imaging, and much more. Studying and carrying out research in one of the 60 laboratories of the Graduate School of Systems Science and Engineering opens the door to professional integration into the Research and Development community in France and abroad.
CentraleSupélec alone hosts more than 1,000 researchers, working in 17 laboratories and research teams, including an international research laboratory and 3 labs without walls, and a federation of mathematics. Eighteen research chairs, most in close relation to industry, are also established on our three campuses and on the European research centre in Pomacle, in the Champagne region of France. The Institution spends 40 million euros on its research every year.
